GRAND RAPIDS, MI – (Mlive) – Eastbound I-196 at the U.S. 131 interchange will be closed through July 31.
The closure will begin Friday, April 9 and will see the replacement of the eastbound I-196 bridge deck over the Grand River.
During the closure, eastbound I-196 traffic will be detoured north onto U.S. 131 and then onto eastbound I-96.
Eastbound I-196 traffic will resume as one lane starting at the Ionia Avenue on-ramp off of Michigan Street. Two lanes of westbound I-196 will remain open during the construction.
The closure is part of a Michigan Department of Transportation interstate improvement project on I-196 starting April 9 and ending around Nov. 15.
About one-and-a-half miles of I-196 between Fuller and Maryland avenues will be rebuilt and widened with one additional lane in each direction as part of the project.
During that time, lane closures and traffic shifts will be in effect.
Plymouth Avenue, which travels under I-196, will be closed through November as crews rebuild the eastbound and westbound bridges on the interstate above.
MDOT officials say the projects will bring safety and operations improvements, as well as extend the service life of the roadway and bridges.
