Holy Week Reflection - Day 4

John 13: 33-35 - “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

These are some of the final parting words that Jesus has with His disciples. They gather to have one final meal together and Jesus humbly washes His disciples’ feet. It is in these moments where we see a beautiful picture of the gospel on display. The holy, righteous, and perfect son of God, making Himself lowly to raise up his children, to empower them to do the work they have been called to do, to love them to the very end.

Jesus is preparing his disciples for what’s to come and is giving them one final thing to know before He leaves them on the earth. He knows they will face various trials, temptations, and persecution yet gives them this command to love one another as He had loved them, so that everyone would know that they are His children.

Throughout their time with Jesus, the disciples would have experienced Jesus’ love that is unchanging, enduring, and radiant. They would have seen with their own eyes His love on display, His compassion, His empathy for others. Jesus is calling them to live, to act, to love in such a way that sets them apart from the rest of the world; to have character that reflects Jesus and Jesus alone and to be the ones who are steadfast, caring, kind in a world where those things are rare.

So, what does this look like for us? How can we love one another so that others know that we are followers of Jesus, set apart from the world?

Maybe volunteer to take the new mom in your neighborhood a homecooked meal and fold some laundry for her. Maybe it looks like sitting with friends in their grief or pain, taking the time to pray with them and remind them of the gospel. Maybe it looks like offering grace and kindness in our conversations with others rather than gossip and judgment. Whatever it is for you, let this be a week to love like Jesus.

Challenge:

1. How can you love those around you this week that is gospel centered?

Encouraging Words From Your Bible

Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. This “foolish” plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God's weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.
