Tuesday, 7/25 – Celebrate Christmas in July! Decorate cookies, pull out a few decorations, and turn up the Christmas music. Serve up some frozen hot chocolate to help beat the heat.
If you aren’t ready to celebrate the holiday quite yet, maybe consider getting ready for Christmas now – start looking for gift bargains, check out Pinterest for craft ideas (like this awesome serving tray made from candy), or get your Christmas card list organized.
Thursday, 7/12 – Grab a blanket, head outside, and do some stargazing tonight! Special events are happening in West Michigan this week. Learn more from the Grand Rapids Amateur Astronomical Association.
Monday, 7/9 – Plan a picnic! If you’re looking to do more than just sandwiches – check out some ideas from FamilyFun here.
Friday, 7/6 – Look for ways to take care of one another during the heat wave. Check in on an elderly neighbor, give a cold drink to the person who delivers your mail, and be sure not to leave pets or children in a vehicle for any length of time. Find some creative ways to keep your cool here.
Thursday, 7/5 – Think COOL thoughts! Maybe listen to Christmas music while sitting in the air conditioning, eat ice cream for dinner, or create some inexpensive fun with these ice activities!
Wednesday, 7/4 – Fireworks! Here’s your resource for West Michigan fireworks as we celebrate our freedom. Have a safe and happy 4th!

Monday, 6/18 – Volunteer! It’s easy to get your family plugged in to a cause you believe in.
Here are some great options:
- Create a “Care Bag” for St. John’s Home – these bags are given to kids when they are removed from their biological parents’ home and taken to a foster home. http://www.stjohnshome.org/get-involved/care-bag-drive
- Get Involved with Kids Food Basket – families can donate food, or volunteer to pack the lunches or decorate lunch bags. During the summer, sack suppers are taken to 15 different locations in Grand Rapids for kids to pick up and take home http://www.kidsfoodbasket.org/
- Humane Society of West Michigan – kids as young as 5 can help with small animals, kids 10 and up can even read to dogs! They also have a big list of items families can donate – http://hswestmi.org/volunteer or http://hswestmi.org/give/items
- VolunteerMatch.com - just type in your location and interests, and you can find opportunities in your area!
Thursday, 6/14 – Catch a game! The midwest has a lot of very cool ballparks, including our very own Fifth Third. I just went to Wrigley Field for the first time… loved the atmosphere, rooftop bleachers & old fashioned feel.
Tuesday, 6/12 – Pick (or pick up) fresh Michigan strawberries & blueberries! We recommend our friends at Bowerman. They just opened for the season, Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Monday, 6/11 – Sign up for a Summer Reading Program at your local library: http://www.kdl.org/home/go/SRC_preview
