  • The “9/11 Never Forget” project
    • The College Republican chapter at Grand Valley State University will be collaborating with the Student Senate
    • The project consists of the arrangement of 2,977 4″ x 6″ U.S. flags to honor the 2,977 victims
    • At noon, the carillon will play patriotic music

  • The Scout Salute at Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, 303 Pearl St. NW

  • 7 a.m. — The Scout Salute will begin with the lowering of the flag from full- to half-staff
  • 8:46 a.m. — This is the time when the first plane hit the first tower at the World Trade Center; the remembrance program will begin; the Boy Scouts, honor guards from local police, fire and military units and members of the community will hold a moment of silence followed by the event keynote speaker, Salvation Army Major Robert Webster and remarks by Steven Ford, President Gerald R. Ford’s son
  • Noon — Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell will honor the men and women who serve the community as members of fire and police departments, EMS and the military. The United States Marine Corp Color Guard will participate
  • 7:45 p.m. — Navy Commander Glen O’Loughlin and Zach Hope, Bob Hope’s grandson, will speak to the community; bagpipes will be played by veterans; Mike Melinn, President Ford Council, will speak before the final salute and the flag being raised to full-staff

  • Annual 9/11 Commemorative Service at Bronson Park

    • Public is welcome
    • Featured speaker will be Western Michigan University President Dr. John Dunn; closing remarks will be offered by former U.S. Marine Logan Stark from East Lansing who produced a video titled “For My 25” in honor of the 25 Marines in his unit who died during his 7-month tour of duty in Afghanistan
    • In the event of inclement weather, the service will take place at the First United Methodist Church on Park Street, across from Bronson Park

    • Cadets from both the Western Michigan University Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC
    • 8:46 a.m. — Taps will be played while the American flag is lowered to half-staff to coincide with the time when the first aircraft hit the Twin Towers in New York City
    • Cadets will then stand silent, shifting out about every 30 minutes until 4 p.m.
