Brittany's Deep Cut: Ben Rector - "Extraordinary Magic"

Behind the Scenes of "Extraordinary Magic":

A talented friend of mine, Ben Shive, sent me a voice memo of this song and asked about my interest in singing it for TV/film licensing. I'm not pitched songs almost ever, as I write all of my music, but it so perfectly captured my feelings watching Jane come into the world. He was originally singing 'I see it, I see it, I swear I do I see the most ordinary magic in you'. I love the sentiment of ordinary things being beautiful, but the song sounded so magical to me that I thought 'Extraordinary Magic' better captured the sentiment, and I loved the way it sang, with a kind of musical (like a Broadway musical) separation of the word 'extraordinary'. I made a few more minor changes here and there, but I can take very little credit for this one. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pro tips: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -Recording this song was a challenge, and it took 3 tries to get it right. I knew I wanted the soft, close piano sound that you only get recording on an upright with a felt practice pad. The problem with this is that I can't usually sing and play at the same time, the piano is so quiet that my voice would always distort the piano mics. I tried recording them separately, but playing to a click removed all the cinema. So, I had my friend Cody Fry learn the piano part, and we did the take on the record live, in the same room, with me singing behind some baffling. This is risky, as you don't have much ability to edit or tune a vocal that's not to a click and is coming through other mics, but I felt like it was the right way to capture the song, and I think the human push and pull from section to section is what brings it to life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -It was recorded on the same piano I've used on every record so far in some form, from 'When a Heart Breaks' and 'White Dress' to '30,000 Feet' and 'The Men That Drive Me Places'. It's in Norman, OK at Blackwatch Studios.
