— Utility officials say crews have worked through the night to restore electricity to thousands of customers who lost it during a wave of severe thunderstorms that hit parts of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

CMS Energy Corp.'s Consumers Energy subsidiary said about 27,600 customers remained without power Tuesday morning — primarily in the Flint, Saginaw and Midland areas. About 45,000 customers lost power statewide as a result of Monday's storms.

DTE Energy says about 17,000 customers are without power, down from about 24,000. The utility's hardest hit area was Macomb County.

The National Weather Service says thunderstorms generated winds gusting to 70 miles per hour, golf-ball size hail and a funnel cloud.

The storms downed power lines and trees, and ripped siding off buildings before moving east out of the state.

— Syria is still a key issue as G-8 leaders meet in the home stretch of their two-day summit.

The big question is whether all eight members can express a joint position on ending the 2-year-old civil war.

Other issues include deterring kidnappings of foreign workers in Africa and cornering globe-trotting companies into paying more taxes.

— Max Scherzer improved to 10-0 and struck out 10, Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer and the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Monday night.

Scherzer became the first pitcher to begin a season 10-0 — with all decisions coming in starts — since Roger Clemens went 11-0 for Toronto in 1997, according to STATS. Scherzer is the second pitcher in Detroit history to start this strong since 1909 when George Mullin was 11-0 with one victory as a reliever, the Elias Sports Bureau said in information provided by the Tigers.

Scherzer allowed one run and seven hits in six innings. Chris Davis hit his major league-leading 24th homer in the second, but struck out with the bases loaded in the fifth and the Orioles down by two runs.

Meanwhile.....The Detroit Tigers have placed right-hander Anibal Sanchez and catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list.

Detroit recalled outfielder Avisail Garcia and catcher Bryan Holaday from Triple-A Toledo on Monday before it series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Tigers plan to call up left-hander Jose Alvarez from Toledo to start in place on Sanchez on Thursday in their series opener against the Boston Red Sox.

Sanchez is expected to miss two starts because of a strained right shoulder and Avila will be out with a bruised left forearm.

Drunken driving enforcement varies across Michigan

— An analysis of law enforcement records found that drunken driving enforcement varies across Michigan.

Mlive is planning to publish a multi-day series and says the small Kalamazoo County community of Richland has more drunken driving arrests per officer than anywhere else in the state.

Last year, the two-officer department arrested nearly 60 drunken drivers. Police Chief Jeff Mattioli says the area is home to Gull Lake, which is known for partying and boating, and there are area two state highways. Mattioli says those likely are factors.

The analysis used staffing data for more than 500 police agencies since 2003. It also used information on nearly 126,000 arrests from 2006 through last year.

It found smaller departments tended to rank higher in arrests per officer, but not always.

— The makers of the next installment of the "Transformers" movie franchise plan to shoot this month near Adrian.

The Daily Telegram of Adrian reports that wheat fields along Michigan 52 in Lenawee County's Fairfield Township will host the shooting of an action scene for the movie "Transformers 4" later this month.

In March, the Michigan Film Office said the state approved for a $20 million incentive for "Transformers 4" and said and shooting would take place in the Detroit area.

The newspaper says moviemakers will use a 2 mile stretch of M-52, about 65 miles southwest of Detroit.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says it's approved the closing of the roadway from June 25 to 29 for the shooting.

GM recalling 193,652 SUVs for fire risk

— General Motors is recalling more than 193,652 SUVs from the 2006 and 2007 model years because a circuit board in the driver's door could short and cause a fire.

The vehicles involved are the Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Ruick Rainier, Saab 9-7x and Isuzu Ascender from the 2006 and 2007 model years. The 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL are also included.

GM says owners should park the vehicles outside until they're repaired.

GM says the defect is caused when water gets into the driver's side door and corrodes a circuit board. If it shorts out, the power door and window switches may stop working. It could also cause overheating, which can lead to smoke or fire.

GM is notifying owners. Dealers will repair the vehicles for free.
