Twins beat sloppy Tigers 11-7

May 17th, 2012 - Sports News

DETROIT (AP) — Jamey Carroll hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to give Minnesota the lead, and the Twins outlasted the sloppy Detroit Tigers 11-7 on Wednesday night.

Detroit made four errors in the first three innings.

The Tigers still led 7-6 when Carroll came up with men on first and second in the sixth. His double off Duane Below (2-1) scored both runners.

Brian Dozier hit a three-run homer for Minnesota in the second, and Trevor Plouffe's two-run shot in the ninth made it 11-7.

Minnesota's Justin Morneau went 1 for 5 with a double in his first game back after being on the disabled list with a sore left wrist.

Alex Burnett (1-0) got the win in relief after Twins starter Nick Blackburn lasted only two innings.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit center fielder Austin Jackson is day to day after leaving Wednesday night's game against Minnesota with a mild abdominal strain.

Jackson departed after hitting a flyout to right in the fourth inning. He was replaced in the outfield by Don Kelly.

Jackson also had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run in the game. He's hitting .331 with five home runs and has been one of Detroit's most consistent producers.

He is by far Detroit's best threat to steal, and his defense in Comerica Park's spacious center field has been valuable to the Tigers.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit manager Jim Leyland says closer Jose Valverde is day to day with a strained lower back.

Valverde was taken out of Detroit's victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, and Leyland says if Valverde is unable to pitch, Joaquin Benoit would probably be the primary candidate to close games. However, the Detroit manager says it could depend on the situation and he "wouldn't etch that in stone."

Valverde converted all 49 of his save chances last year but has struggled in 2012. He's 2-1 with a 5.51 ERA this year, and he's already blown two saves in nine chances. He's walked 12 and struck out 14.
