Popular Labor Day events are "Bridge Walks"

Sep 3rd, 2012 - Local News

Walkers and runners are expected to converge on the Mackinac Bridge for one of Michigan's most popular Labor Day traditions.

The annual Mackinac Bridge walk takes place Monday morning across the 5-mile long span. A run also takes place and Gov. Rick Snyder is among those expected to attend.

Thousands typically turn out for the annual trek across the bridge linking Michigan's lower and upper peninsulas. It starts in St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula and ends in Mackinaw City.

Labor Day is the one time each year when the bridge, which crosses the Straits of Mackinac where Lakes Huron and Michigan converge, is open to foot traffic.

Grand Rapids will hold its own 5-mile walk. The mayor is leading a group of walkers throughout the city and over several bridges. The walk begins at 8 a.m. near the corner of Pearl and Scribner.

It has been a tradition for several years in the Saugatuck/Douglas area. The 14-th annual Bridge Walk over the Blue Star Bridge begins at 9 a.m.
