Kalamazoo officer kills suspect in hotel

Jan 25th, 2013 - Local News

— Kalamazoo police say one of their officers fatally shot a domestic assault suspect during a confrontation in a hotel lobby.

In a news release issued early Friday, the Kalamazoo public safety department announced that the 34-year-old was pronounced dead at Bronson Methodist Hospital following the shooting Thursday night at the Best Western Hospitality Inn.

KDPS Chief Jeff Hadley says the officer who shot the man was sent home and has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

Neither the officer nor the suspect has been named.

According to Hadley, officers investigated a report of a domestic assault involving the suspect on Thursday afternoon, but the man wasn't there when they arrived.

They caught up with him eight hours later at the hotel where the shooting took place.
