Come to Jesus

Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Psalm 95:6-7

I remember growing up my mom would say, “You need a come to Jesus moment” any time I found myself being what I call “fleshy” (it's the word I use for moments in life when we find ourselves acting in the flesh of the world rather than honoring God’s will for our lives). Anytime I talked back to my parents, was mean to my sister, or was lazy in my work, the words “You need a come to Jesus moment” was the reality check my heart and soul needed. What my mom intended at the core of this sentiment was for me to notice I needed time with the Lord; to repent, to refocus, and to be refreshed in His presence just by coming to the feet of Jesus.

“Come.” We use this word every day. We invite friends and neighbors into our homes with "Why don’t you come over for dinner tomorrow night?" Or we tell our kids, "Come here now." We ask family to join us with "Come watch this movie with me," or simply say "Come on, let’s go for a walk." It’s how we invite others into our lives. As I reflect on this simple phrase my mom used often in our home, I understand now that it was a simple reminder of the greater invitation the Lord offers us every day; to come into a relationship with Him.

This invitation is scattered all throughout Scripture. We see Jesus say, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). In Mark 1:16-18 Jesus calls his first disciples and says, “Come, follow me and I will send you out as fishers of men.” And here in Psalm 95:6, “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our maker."

All of these are an opportunity to share life and to be invited into the presence of the Lord. The Lord desires a relationship with us and desires that we come to Him. Psalm 95:6-7 is a wonderful invitation to come humbly before the Lord and to worship Him because He is “The Rock of Our Salvation,” “Great King,” “Our Maker,” and “Shepherd.”

So this Easter season, wherever you are, know that you can come to Jesus. You don’t need to clean yourself up, you can have your “come to Jesus” moment in your weariness with all your burdens. Even when you are being fleshy, you can still come to Him. You can come to Him, maybe for the first time, and decide to follow after His ways instead of your own. You can come before Him bowing, kneeling, singing, for all of His greatness. Come, Jesus is inviting you in.

Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
