Dare to Not Compare

I appreciate social media – it’s one of the ways I’m able to stay in contact with friends and family across the country, and also see what my 20-something kids are up to over the weekend when they forget to return my texts. I find a lot of fun things to share on-air through social media and it helps me record personal milestones. It’s also something that I am really challenged with. There’s a certain aesthetic that has become prominent in my feed – images of houses that are not only tidy but are also totally aligned with the latest home-interior trends. Family photos where the relationships are perfect, and no one cried, yelled or felt insecure about the clothing they were wearing. An individual who isn’t just excelling in their career, but also at parenting, volunteering, and their spiritual journey, not to mention fitness and party planning. Seeing how amazing these people are at all the things often makes me feel “less than”, because I see what’s happening in my world, and well, it’s nothing like that. Here's the secret though…I’m not able to measure up to a picture-perfect standard, because often the person posting isn’t living up to it either. Everything is curated and posted with a certain reaction in mind, and we’re seeing someone else’s “highlight reel” and comparing it to our “behind the scenes”. Chances are, the perfect family has it’s challenges too. The perfectly clean kitchen has a laundry room overflowing with clothes that need to be folded, and the person who is seemingly perfect at everything is also feeling totally burned out from trying to be everything to all people all the time. As we enter this new season, perhaps it can be a season of death to comparison and growth in the truth. The truth of who we really are in Christ – unique, wonderfully made, chosen, loved, redeemed, an overcomer, forgiven. These aren’t just buzz words that help boost our confidence, they are what God really says about us…no matter how messy our lives may be. And because I’m the kind of person who needs to say things out loud to help my heart and my brain remember, here are a few songs that help provide the reminders of who we really are in Christ – Anne Wilson – “Hey Girl” Unspoken – “What He Says About You” Ben Fuller – “Who I Am” Hillsong Worship – “Who You Say I Am” Tenth Avenue North – “You Are More”

Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame… For your Maker is your husband – the Lord Almighty is his name – the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.
