The Generosity of God

"When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers – the moon and the stars you set in place – what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?" PSALM 8:3-4 NLT We often have a chance to ask listeners about their summer plans and so many of you love camping. You’ve got your favorite campgrounds, the group you go with every year and those campfire stories that will be recalled for years to come. Of course, it’s fun to eat s’mores and have a chance to unplug from our screens, but camping also provides a chance for us to enjoy God’s creation. My church has been going through a series called “God Is ______” where we’ve been reminded of the many attributes of God. A few weeks ago, the topic was God’s generosity, and how we can see that in so many ways – through Christ, through each other, and through CREATION. In the words of Pastor Jeff Manion, “God did not create because He was lonely, bored, or needy. It was the way He went public with his generosity”. The moon and stars that were set in place were done intentionally with YOU in mind. Each one, a whisper of God’s attention and care for us, beings that are so undeserving, but given so much. So, here’s a challenge for all of us, the next time we have a chance to put our toes in the sand at Lake Michigan, eat fresh sweet corn from the farmer’s field down the street, or smell the scent of freshly cut grass...remember the generosity of God. He could have made our planet functional, sterile, and black and white. Instead, he gave us incredible sunsets, the Pictured Rocks, fields of fragrant lavender, and ingredients to make ice cream. He is generous. He is good. And He is HERE with us. Take a deep breath, enjoy, and say “thanks”. (If you’d like to view the full sermon, you can check it out here – https://vimeo.com/968970257)

This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.
