Fister, Tigers beat Boston in matchup of AL's best

Sep 3rd, 2013 - Sports News

BOSTON (AP) — Doug Fister rebounded from a miserable start with seven shutout innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 3-0 Monday in a matchup of teams with the AL's best records.

The Tigers won despite missing Miguel Cabrera for the third straight game. He has been sidelined by a strained abdomen, though general manager Dave Dombrowski said the star has been more hampered by a groin problem.

Prince Fielder and Andy Dirks each drove in a run for the AL Central-leading Tigers, who won for the fourth time in five games.

The AL East-leading Red Sox lost for just the second time in nine games.

Miguel Cabrera was not in the Detroit Tigers' lineup for the third straight game for Monday afternoon's matchup against the Red Sox.

The reigning AL MVP and Triple Crown winner has been sidelined by a strained abdomen, but GM Dave Dombrowski said during an interview on a Boston radio station that he's been more hampered by a "groin" problem.

With Cabrera out, manager Jim Leyland moved Prince Fielder up to third in the order and Victor Martinez fourth. Don Kelly is playing third base and batting seventh.

Cabrera leads major league baseball with a .358 batting average and 130 RBIs and with 43 homers, he trails only Baltimore's Chris Davis.
