Communities across the South are cleaning up and dealing with a storm system that resulted in tornados and brings snow and slippery roads to the north and east.
-Forecasters say the recent storm system will impact some 80 million Americans that are waking up today under winter weather alerts.
This latest system is impacting New Mexico up through Maine and bringing heavy rain for some and snow for others.
There were reports of at least 14 tornados in the last 24 hours. tornadoes touched down east of Houston, Texas Tuesday afternoon and did damage to homes and businesses. Injuries were reported from a touchdown in Louisiana overnight. There are tornado watches and warnings in the Florida panhandle this morning.
The widespread storm system will bring airport delays.
The heaviest snowfall is expected to land in northern New York through Maine, where some residents could get a foot of snow or more. Parts of the central Appalachians were also expecting snow today. Michigan will also feel the impact of the system and a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of southern Michigan, especially those closer to the southern border. A number of schools have closed today.
Not related to the weather, was an earthquake in California. A 4.2 quake was centered about 10 miles south of Malibu Beach early this morning. There were no reports of major damage. According to the USGS ShakeAlert, the 4.2 magnitude earthquake was "too small to trigger the delivery of #ShakeAlert-powered alerts to cell phones.
The earthquake was followed by a number of aftershocks of magnitude 3.5, 2.8 and 2.6.
