Today is a time to honor and remember the lives lost at the hands of the Nazi government.

(Positive Prep) - Today (Friday) is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 to honor and remember the millions of lives lost at the hands of the Nazi government. January 27 is the anniversary of the Red Army’s liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945. Many events will be held all around the world today and you may even see some TV specials on tonight.

This year, the day will be marked with the theme “Home and Belonging,” according to the United Nations.

A memorial ceremony will be held today in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations headquarters in New York. Those attending will include Holocaust survivors and their families, and veterans.

People from across the United States will remember the Holocaust at museums and memorials.  It provides an opportunity to learn about what happened and how it relates to today. It might be a good time to read a book, watch a documentary, or visit a museum. Or do something to help those affected.

The nonprofit, The Blue Card, reports that a third of the 100,000 survivors living in the United States live below the poverty line. You can help by donating resources or offering your time.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
