There is still no Speaker of the House but 9 more candidates say they want to be considered .
WASHINGTON D.C. - House Republicans are expected to hold a candidate forum Monday evening to hear from nine candidates. The Republican conference will hear from the nine members at a candidate forum tonight and are expected to vote by secret ballot on a new nominee Tuesday morning.
The candidates who met that deadline and want to be considered are: Reps. Jack Berman, Byron Donalds, Tom Emmer, Kevin Hern, Mike Johnson, Dan Meuser, Gary Palmer, Austin Scott and Pete Sessions.
Jack Bergman is from Michigan. He is a retired United States Marine Corps lieutenant general serving as the U.S. representative from Michigan's 1st congressional district since 2017. He is a member of the Republican Party. He served as commanding general of the Marine Forces Reserve and the Marine Forces North. He also served as a naval aviator, flying rotary-winged aircraft such as the CH-46 and UH-1, as well as fixed-wing aircraft such as the T-28 and KC-130.
After announcing his candidacy for Speaker of the House, Rep. Bergman signed a pledge to support the Republican Speaker Designate following Conference voting, and encouraged all of his colleagues to join the pledge.
House Republicans have been working to elect a speaker since Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted earlier this month. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise withdrew his candidacy after receiving the nomination on Oct. 11, and then on Friday Rep. Jim Jordan was dropped as the nominee after he lost a third ballot for Speaker. 217 votes are needed to serve as Speaker of the House.
