October is Pastor Appreciation Month, but this Sunday is Pastor Appreciation Day.
Focus on the Family began promoting Clergy Appreciation Month in the mid-90's as a national month of observance. Clergy Appreciation Day started to be recognized on the second Sunday in October.
As of 2022, there are an estimated 51-thousand individuals who are regularly employed as clergy across the country. They serve multiple functions in the church on a daily basis as well as during major life events for their parishioners.
Here are a number of ways to show your appreciation to your pastors.
A handwritten note of appreciation
A ‘thank you’ basket with their favorite coffee, snacks, or allergy friendly foods.
A gift of a new ergonomic chair, or software they can use.
An extra day off (let them know before Saturday/Sunday)
Help around the church by volunteering
A special appreciation video of the pastor and the work they do
You can also help with repairs around their house, the gift of a new appliance, gift cards to restaurants or coffee shops. You can also have children draw pictures and write special notes to say ‘thank you.’
If you have the ability in your congregation to supply a vacation rental, or even help with a special holiday vacation, you can offer a few more days to recoup.
And if you are coming up short on ideas, just ask your pastor what they’d like! While pastors won’t expect a gift, it’s always nice to be appreciated.
