2/13/24 - MSU Remembers Those Impacted By Tragic Events One Year Ago

Today marks the one year anniversary of the tragic events that took place on the campus of Michigan State University where 3 students lost their lives and 5 others were injured.

EAST LANSING, Mich.) - Members of the Michigan State University community are invited for a day of remembrance, one year after a tragic fatal shooting. 

It was a year ago tonight, that a gunman opened fire at two locations on campus.  Three students lost their lives and five others were wounded. 

Events and activities are planned to provide individuals an opportunity to reflect, grieve and honor those lost, injured, and impacted by the tragedy. 

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Reflective Spaces

  • Brody Hall, Room 175
  • Main Library, Green Room (W444), support dogs will be present
  • International Center, Room TBD
  • Hannah Community Center, Recital Room (246)
  • Eppley Center, Room E105, only therapy dogs

To provide a safe environment for individual reflection by members of our community, reflective spaces will be available at locations across campus and the Hannah Community Center in East Lansing. These spaces will be staffed by crisis counselors for those seeking additional emotional support.

9 a.m.-8 p.m. Reflective Space

  • Alumni Memorial Chapel

Religious leaders representing the spectrum of denominational beliefs will be present throughout the day for those who express a need for support. Crisis counselors will also be present from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

10 a.m.-2 p.m. Healing Through Kindness and Service

  • Hannah Community Center; International Center, Room 115

Kindness activities like writing notes of support and gift-making to keep personally or share with others will be available at both locations.

Service activities will only be available at the Hannah Community Center. Activities include packaging supply kits for K-12 students and families for Lansing and East Lansing Public Schools, Edgewood Village and the MSU Student Parent Resource Center, and decorating brown sack lunch bags for Kids Food Basket.

 

Free shuttles will run between the International Center south entrance and Hannah Community Center from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. to facilitate participation by community members who do not wish to drive or walk between sites. Registration is not required but is encouraged.

7:30-9:30 p.m. Remembrance Gathering

  • MSU Lot 62

This gathering is open to all. Opportunities to engage include participating in a shared community art creation, communing with one another and providing feedback around the permanent memorial planning effort.

A short program will begin around 8:10 p.m. with a prerecorded reflective message, playing of MSU Shadows, moments of silence and ringing of the Beaumont Tower bells at 8:18 p.m. and 8:25 p.m. A livestream of the program will begin around 8 p.m.

Also during this time, Berkey Hall and the MSU Union will be lit up green.

8 p.m. Luminary Lighting

  • Various Locations

Spartans around the globe are invited to join each other in lighting a luminary to participate in our remembrance gathering from wherever they are that evening.

Luminaries have been shared with alumni chapters across the country and can be picked up while supplies last on the main MSU campus or throughout the East Lansing community from Feb. 5-13, 2024.
