Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died after an assassination attempt.
Abe was delivering a campaign speech in Nara, Japan, when a man in his 40's, using a homemade weapon, shot Abe in the chest and neck. Doctors report the bullet used was close enough to his heart. Abe was bleeding profusely when he was taken to a local hospital, listed in critical condition. However, it appears Abe died either on the way to the hospital or a short time later.
Abe had retired from public service two years ago, but remained a presence in international relations. He used his position to try and improve relations among various countries during his retirement. He had stepped down from Japanese politics due to health reasons two years ago.
Leaders from around the world posted messages of support to both Abe and his wife, as well as the people of Japan.
