Hurricane Beryl came ashore south of Houston early Monday morning and eventually could impact Michigan later midweek.
- People living on the Texas coast spent the weekend boarding up windows and left beach towns as they prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Beryl. Beryl made landfall as a category 1 hurricane, just south of Houston, Texas early this morning.
Major ports in Texas ceased operations Sunday as the United States Coast Guard announced that Port Condition Zulu was to be implemented ahead of Hurricane Beryl making landfall.
Beryl is expected to weaken to a tropical storm Monday and a tropical depression Tuesday. The weather service is forecasting a turn to the northeast and increase in speed Monday night and Tuesday. It is eventually expected to move through the lower Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday. Parts of southern Michigan could be impacted by the system with rain, but no severe weather is expected.
Dangerous storm surge and strong winds are a concern for Texas. The system is expected to weaken to a tropical storm and then tropical depression Tuesday.
There are already a number of power outages.
Rain is falling 2 to 3 inches per hour and flash flooding is a concern. Some areas could get 10 to 15 inches of rain.
Last week Beryl devastated parts of the Caribbean resulting in a number of deaths.
