Consumers Energy says those who wish to continue using their credit or debit card will be charged a processing fee of $2.99.

The company announced that they’re adding a $2.99 charge to bills when they are paid using debit and/or credit cards after October 1.
Consumers Energy sent an email to customers stating, that in part, credit and debit card transaction fees are going up.
They will continue to accept checks and encourage customers to utilize their “fee-free payment methods.”
To avoid the processing fee, customers can set up an auto-payment online with their checking or savings account or by sending in their payment by mail.
