The FBI has arrested one person following a dangerous incident at Mar-A-Lago. Police say former President Donald Trump was unharmed.
The FBI says the suspect was unable to get any shot off on the former President and was apprehended following his getaway vehicle being located.
Ryan Wesley Routh, is charged with two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The weapon was also found with the serial number removed.
Acting Director of the Secret Service Ronald Rowe commended his agents for quick action after spotting the alleged gunman with the barrel of his rifle pointing in the direction of the former President while he was at his resort in Florida. Rowe says the agency needs more resources and support for the agency to be effective.
"Success, we have to have it every day. We cannot have failures. And in order to do that, we're going to have some hard conversations with Congress and we're going to achieve that."
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw says their agency was able to surmise that Routh was never in a position to harm the former President. Bradshaw says "the suspect didn't even get close to getting a round off and we apprehended him and brought him to justice."
Two months ago Trump was on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania when a gunman shot at the former President. That gunman was killed by police and sparked a nationwide debate over appropriate security for the campaign.
At this point, it is believed Routh acted alone.
