Various events around the state will commemorate the slain civil rights leader on this national holiday.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on Monday. Federal, state and many city services will be off on this federal holiday. Here is a list of events taking place around West Michigan to commemorate the life and work of King.

 

Ada

The Amy Van Andel Library will host a reading and discussion of the book "Hidden Figures." Wednesday, January 22 from 2-3pm.

 

Allendale

Events at Grand Valley State University. Various speakers, events, and a Day of Service. A complete list is found HERE.

 

Caledonia Township

Davenport University is holding a silent march starting at the Auditorium at Lettinga Campus. January 21 at 2pm.

 

Grand Rapids

The Candied Yam is hosting the Martin Luther King Day of Service food drive. January 20th from 11:30 to 1pm. For details visit their Facebook page HERE.

Calvin University's January Series features Pulitzer Prize winning speaker Jonathan Eig discussing his book " “King: A Life.” Details are HERE.

 

Holland

MLK Day Leadership Summit hosted by Hope College January 20th at 8am.. Details HERE.

The Holland Museum is hosting an exhibit to commemorate MLK Day. January 20th from 10am to 2pm.

 

Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo Valley Community College has events throughout the weekend leading up to Monday, January 20th. For details visit HERE.

God’s Kitchen of Michigan and Broncos Kitchen free Martin Luther King Jr. Day meal. The meal will be provided at the Western Michigan University Kanley Chapel, 1903 W. Michigan Avenue. January 20th from 5-6pm.

 

Muskegon

Mount Zion Church of God will host a celebration of the life of MLK. January 19th at 5pm.
