These new scams are targeting homeowners over supposedly late tax bills.
We are learning of another scam hitting area residents, this time over false tax bills in Kent County.
The Kent County Treasurer reports scammers are targeting elderly homeowners, falsely claiming they are behind on tax bills but could get help through a program, that turns out to be a way to separate you from your money. The calls are leaving behind messages claiming the homeowner needs help and their organization can be of assistance. They appear as real estate agents who will buy up property for huge cash payments. They also offer assistance programs to help bring the bills up to date. However, they turn out to be fraudsters who take the money, but don't deliver any of the services promised.
Treasurer Peter MacGregor says the department will only contact those who are delinquent and include Certified Mail.
If you receive such a phone call or email that you didn't solicit and it sounds like a 'too good to be true' offer, please contact the Kent County Prosecutors Office.
