Volunteers will be knocking on doors to help ensure working smoke detectors are in homes across the state.
Members of the American Red Cross may be showing up at your door this month. It's all part of an effort to ensure working smoke detectors are in every home in the state. Installing an operational smoke detector in a home is proven to reduce the risk of death in a home fire by almost half.
In a lead-up to its annual Sound the Alarm initiative, the Red Cross will canvass select Michigan neighborhoods beginning this week to distribute information about registering for a smoke alarm installation and rallying community members to help install them.
Sound the Alarm is part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which was launched in 2014 to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries by installing free smoke alarms and teaching families about home fire safety. These smoke alarms are made by possible by donations to the Red Cross.
Since the start of the campaign, the Red Cross has installed more than 2.8 million smoke alarms nationwide and made more than 1.2 million households safer nationwide. In Michigan, the Red Cross has installed more than 85,100 smoke alarms and made more than 33,100 households safer since 2014.
Volunteers are going door to door in multiple communities offering free smoke detectors. Red Cross volunteers and team members will be visible in Red Cross branded apparel and canvass during daylight hours.
