April 1—October 23, 2022 Fee: Included with admission. After being closed for a year during renovations, our expanded sculpture galleries reopen with the much-anticipated exhibition Yinka Shonibare CBE: Planets in My Head. The first of its kind in the United States, this exhibition presents works by Shonibare from the past two decades, many of them rarely exhibited in the U.S., with sculptures, painting, photographs, collages, embroidery and film. A self-proclaimed “postcolonial hybrid” of British-Nigerian heritage, Shonibare has emerged as one of the leading artistic voices in the global art world. He is best-known for his playful combination of colorful Dutch wax-fabric patterns popular in West Africa with the fashion of upper-class Victorian culture. As this exhibition reveals, Shonibare thinks globally and uses his artistic imagination to comment on subjects of art history, environment, education, knowledge, food distribution, and other universal concerns.

Mel Chin & Elizabeth Turk: The Space In-Between
November 18—March, 2023 Fee: Included with admission. For more than 40 years, the MacArthur Foundation has supported creative people with its Fellowship Program. Among them are artists Elizabeth Turk and Mel Chin, who became MacArthur fellows in 2001 and 2019 respectively. The Space In-Between proposes that by juxtaposing these two artists, who have very different approaches to creating sculpture, a dynamic public conversation around art and social change can happen. Over the years, Turk has developed a distinct body of work in marble and stone sculpture, a craft involving hand carving and polishing. Chin is best known as a conceptual artist whose sculptural work is ever-changing and constantly metamorphosing into new forms and material. However, as this exhibition will reveal, both artists engage with art and science to express concerns over environmental change, loss of natural habitat, species extinction and the work of memory. The focus on the space between studio and socially engaged art allows for a differentiated and close look at Turk’s and Chin’s creative journey over time.
