Benton Harbor hopes to begin replacing more lead water pipes this spring.
LANSING, Mich. — The city of Benton Harbor is accepting bids from contractors as they look to replace all lead water pipes no later than 2023.
The city has seen elevated levels of the toxic metal in the municipal supply.
Bids on the work will be accepted until 10 a.m. Dec. 17, and contracts are expected to be issued in January and then voted on by the city commission.
The project divides the work into 12 zones, and contractors can bid on as many zones as they have the capacity to work on.
To expedite the replacement, work in all zones will take place at the same time on a street-to-street basis.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has promised to spend millions of dollars to replace the lines in 18 months and hopes to being work next spring.
