Grand Rapids City High Middle School Ranked #1 in the State and #18 in the Nation by U.S. News & World Report.
City High ranked number one in the U.S. for their graduation rates. They were also one of the most diverse schools on the list, with 50% of their students coming from minority backgrounds.
To be eligible for a state ranking, a school must be awarded a national gold or silver medal.
According to U.S. News & World Report, “Scholars have the opportunity to take International Baccalaureate coursework and exams. The IB participation rate at City High Middle School is 100%. The total minority enrollment is 50%, and 48% of scholars are economically disadvantaged.” “I want to congratulate all the City High scholars, families, and staff on this remarkable accomplishment,” said Dr. Leadriane Roby, Superintendent of Schools. “Not only are they the top ranked school in the state, but they also achieved their highest national ranking ever.” City High Middle School was the first school in the area to offer the coveted International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Programme and has consistently been ranked among the top high schools in America. City High Middle School was also named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in 2019. “We could not be prouder of our scholars, staff, district, and community for this achievement! The inspiration that this accomplishment provides is worth so much to our community right now,” said Ryan Huppert, principal of City High Middle School. “These rankings reflect all the hard work that scholars and staff put forth to succeed here. Seeing those efforts translate into such a high level of success and recognition means the world to our school. Go Pegasi!”
The annual rankings took a look at 24,000 high schools nationwide and factor in criteria like SAT scores, graduation rates, college readiness and a school’s demographics.
