The four men were on trial for allegedly plotting to kidnap the Governor over her Covid-19 restrictions.
A jury of six men and six women have returned two not guilty verdicts for two men accused of plotting to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Brandon Caserta and Daniel Harris were both released from custody after the jury handed down their decision. Two other men, Barry Croft Jr., and Adam Fox will remain behind bars after a mistrial was declared. The pair could face another trial. No word yet on a date.
The Governor’s office released a statement following the announcement. Governor Whitmer’s Chief of Staff announced in the statement that the Governor remains committed to working hard for the people of Michigan.
Statement released by Joanne Huls, Whitmer Chief of Staff -
“Today, Michiganders and Americans—especially our children—are living through the normalization of political violence. The plot to kidnap and kill a governor may seem like an anomaly. But we must be honest about what it really is: the result of violent, divisive rhetoric that is all too common across our country. There must be accountability and consequences for those who commit heinous crimes. Without accountability, extremists will be emboldened.
“The governor remains focused on her work on behalf of Michigan and all Michiganders. That includes addressing violence and threats to our democracy. We appreciate the prosecutors and law enforcement officers for their work on this case.”
