Many plan to gather to watch today's solar eclipse. Several libraries and museums plan to offer events.
Today, April 8, 2024, is when the solar eclipse takes place across the United States. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly in between Earth and the sun.
The West Michigan area will see a partial solar eclipse where about 94% of the sun will be covered. The eclipse will begin across West Michigan just before 2 p.m., the peak around 3:10 and will conclude around 4:20 p.m.
The next total solar eclipse to occur in part of the United States won’t be for another 20 years.
The eclipse should only be viewed with special glasses to prevent damage to the eyes.
