This month is an opportunity to urge bicyclists and motorists to share the roadways by obeying traffic laws and respecting each other.
May is National Bicycle Safety Month.
It was created to remind the public to put "safety first."
Whether you are a beginner or a regular biker, it is a healthy, low-impact exercise that people of all ages can enjoy.
Bike riders are encouraged to:
- Be predictable, safe, and seen: obey traffic laws, use hand signals, use lights at night, and wear a helmet.
-Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle.
-If there's a bike lane, use it, unless making a left turn, passing, or approaching a place where a right turn is allowed.
-Yield to pedestrians. Bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians within marked crosswalks or within unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
Kalamazoo is hosting a free bike clinic at Mayors' Riverfront Park Wednesday, 5-7 p.m. The Bike Rodeo will help teach children biking skills. They will have some helmets to give away. There will be a bike fixing station. A safety course for kids will be set up that will focus on biking skills. Each child will also receive a goodie bag with educational information and a water bottle.
