A major expressway in Grand Rapids will be closed as bridge work is done.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Transportation will replace the eastbound and westbound I-196 bridges in Grand Rapids near Market Avenue.
This project will force closures for years.
MDOT expects the project to completely wrap up in late 2025.
Crews will begin replacing the bridge over the Grand River and Market Avenue later this fall in October.
A community meeting will be held Thursday to provide more information.
Eastbound I-196 at Market Avenue will remain closed through July 2024.
Traffic is suggested to detour to eastbound M-6 to northbound US-131.
The second phase of the project will start in August 2024 when lanes of westbound I-196 at Market Avenue will close.
MDOT is asking for public input via a virtual meeting Thursday from 5-6 p.m.
