The rehabilitation hospital will become the ninth in the nation and the first of its kind in the state free standing rehab hospital for kids.
It's a first of its kind hospital and its coming to Grand Rapids.
Mary Free Bed and Spectrum Health are teaming up on a 60 millon dollar, free standing children’s rehabilitation hospital in downtown. The partners have been working for years to find new ways to improve services to children impacted by various conditions needing rehabilitation services. Governor Gretchen Whitmer says it will impact more than the West Michigan community.
"But they serve Michiganders from 81 of our 83 counties. Including nearly six in 10 kids who need inpatient, rehabilitation. And today because of this budget, they'll continue to have the resources to grow, to thrive and to continue to serve our kids."
The state included 10 million dollars for the project through the recent budget which the governor will sign soon. Health leaders will begin a campaign of both public and private sector funding they plan to conclude by the start of 2023. They hope to begin construction on the project by the end of next year.
