City leaders say due to the higher number of patients in critical condition, the death toll could go up.
Leaders in New York City say there could potentially be other deaths following a tragic apartment fire this weekend. 19 people were killed with more remaining hospitalized and around a dozen listed in critical condition.
The blaze late Sunday is believed to have started after a faulty space heater malfunctioned. The smoke was so intense that stairwells were filling quickly and prevented people from escaping. The majority of injuries were smoke inhalation.
Firefighters say smoke alarms were going off, but residents say alarms going off are common in the building and many just ignored the sound.
This is the worst fire tragedy in the city in almost 30 years.
