1/20/22 - New Report Finds Former Pope did Nothing to Address Abuse

Pope Benedict XVI was aware of abuse when he was Archbishop in Munich in late 70's and early 80's.

A new report from the catholic church says that Pope Benedict XVI knew of cases of abuse by priests but did nothing to prevent further abuse.  The report asserts Benedict, who was archbishop in Munich from 1977 to 1981, knew of four cases but did not remove the Priests or discipline them in any fashion.  Benedict’s lawyers say the former Pope maintains his innocence.

The former Pope has been under scrutiny for years after allegations of abuse surfaced.  A law firm hired to look into the allegations submitted the report citing records of meetings notes acknowledging Benedict, then Archbishop Josef Ratziinger, was present at several meetings where the issue was discussed.

The Vatican has released a statement saying they will look further into the report.

Benedict is now 94 and currently resides in Vatican City,
