Levin passed away on Thursday. The cause of death has not been released.

Former Michigan Senator Carl Levin passed away on Thursday.  Levin served in the US Senate for 36 years. While no exact cause of death was released, Levin had been dealing with lung cancer since 2017.

Levin was a Detroit native who’s down to earth demeanor was evident on the Senate floor.

In his final speech on the US Senate floor in 2014, Levin talked about the honor it was to serve.

"The highest honor any citizen of a democracy can receive, is to be elected to represent his or her fellow Americans; to be their fiduciary."

Levin garnered respect from both sides of the aisle and with his occasionally rumpled appearance gave no airs of superiority.

Levin passed away at the age of 87.

I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people, Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them. And you will be a light to guide the nations. You will open the eyes of the blind. You will free the captives from prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons.
