Following months of scandal, and the massive loss of support, Johnson announces he will be stepping down.
In a sign of the political situation in Britain, hundreds of people gathered outside his residence, with supporters yelling their support, while opponents booed the Prime Minister. The country itself appears to be favoring his ouster as a recent poll shows 7 in 10 British citizens believe he must go.
The political pressure on Borris Johnson also appears to have been to much. The British Prime Minister has lost support and confidence from most of his supporters in Parliament as 58 ministers have announced their resignations. That includes three top members of Johnson’s party who announced they were stepping down.
Johnson's address did not appear to have been well thought out. Saying "Them's the breaks" Johnson added a recognition of his situation: "It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister,"
Johnson’s administration has been rocked by multiple scandals involving himself and many close to him. Multiple incidents of political missteps, situations of misjudgement and mismanagement, have cost Johnson any political goodwill that he built as he was swept into office 2019.
While Johnson appears ready to step aside, that might not happen for months. The British system allows for an inner party contest to determine its next leader. That is scheduled to take place in October. Johnson could remain as Prime Minister, but would be severely hampered by the loss of confidence in his leadership.
