The three term Governor announces he'll step down in 14 days following a report by the State's Attorney General outlined accusations from 11 women that he acted inappropriately.
"The best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to governing,"
Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation after the release of a report detailing assault allegations made against Cuomo that filled 168 pages. The accusations came from 11 women who either worked for the Governor in his office or were associated with the administration.
When accusations began earlier this year, the support for Coumo began to fade. Just this month, President Joe Biden urged Cuomo to step aside given the severity of the accusations.
Just an hour before the governor made his announcement, his attorney outlined the faults in the report and defended Cuomo saying the charges do not rise to the level of impeaching a sitting governor.
Cuomo defended himself saying that his actions were never intended to harm an individual and that he was the product of a different era where his actions would not be seen as assault.
Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul will assume the role as governor on August 24. Hochul has worked in the NY legislature and as a county clerk. She will become the first woman governor of New York.
