US athletes will still be allowed to compete in the Olympics, but the administration will not be sending government officials to the games.
There has been in increase of pressure by the United States on China over allegations of forced labor and human rights abuses, particularly against the Uyghur population and other ethnic and religious minority groups.
Beijing is set to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in February.
Human rights activists and some lawmakers have called for a boycott of the event.
