Detroit will soon get the first electric vehicle charging road.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Tuesday that the first electric vehicle charging road should be working by 2023.
The roadway would wirelessly charge electric vehicles while they are in motion or stationary.
The stretch of road will be located in the Detroit area and will be close to where Ford Motor Co. is restoring the old Michigan Central train station for self-driving vehicles.
Electreon, is a wireless and in-road wireless electric vehicle charging technology company, that will deploy its first public wireless EV charging road system in Michigan.
Pilots for Electreon are already operating in Germany, Italy and Sweden. They are also preparing to provide a plug-free charging network for 200 public buses in Tel Aviv, Israel.
The company said it is the first in the world to be successfully demonstrated on public roads.
