Signatures will be collected for a bill that would help more students attend private schools in Michigan.
LANSING, Mich. — Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos says she is backing a Michigan ballot drive to let students attend private schools and pay other educational expenses with accounts funded by tax-free corporate and individual donations.
Critics say it's unconstitutional due to a ban against public assistance for nonpublic schools.
DeVos says it would give all children access to a quality education.
The group needs about 340,000 valid signatures to send each of two initiatives to the Legislature.
Lawmakers could enact the measures into law despite the Governor's veto of identical bills.
