With the help of LSSU, a new center for oil research begins operating in Sault Ste. Marie.
-U.S. Senator Gary Peters of Michigan was on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Great Lakes Center of Expertise at the Lake Superior State University's Center for Freshwater Research and Education Center.
The center is located in Sault Ste. Marie and it will help examine the impacts of oil spills in freshwater environments and also help to develop quick responses.
LSSU is close to the Sector Sault Coast Guard and is one reason why the center is being located there.
A second location of expertise will be located in Ann Arbor.
The Great Lakes, including Lake Ontario which doesn't touch Michigan, account for one fifth of the world's supply of surface fresh water.
